International Student in New York City: A Friendly Guide
Welcome to New York City! Navigating the city can be overwhelming, where do you even start?
So many places to go, so little time! But here’s how to make the most of your time here while being an international student. Read on for my top tips for studying and life in the Big Apple, and a list of free landmarks to see!
Tip #1: Taking Advantage of Institutional Promotions and Offers
Often times, the institution that you’re a part of will be able to provide some connections with local restaurants, bars, pubs, shopping centres, movie theaters, entertainment centers, and sight-seeing opportunities for a cheaper price than tourists and non-students may have to pay. Take advantage of these offers! They can end up making a big difference for your wallet, and a plus side is that you can go with fellow classmates!
Here is a quick list of all the great things you can do for FREE in New York City:
A classic and effortlessly beautiful place for picnics in the sun and walks along the Hudson River. The green lawns and the blueness of the river makes this park a lovely intersection between nature and the hustle and bustle of New York City.
Not in the island of Manhattan, but nevertheless, one of the best places to go for sports, and there’s a lot of space at this park! In the summer, there are also yummy food vendors for fresh lemonade, ice cream, and lobster rolls.
An Instagram sensation. This abandoned-railroad-turned-park is more of a walkway, but features great views of the Chelsea neighborhood and amazing views for photoshoot opportunities!
Another great photoshoot opportunity. Sitting at 22 stories high and shaped like a juicy slice of pizza, this building decorates the Flatiron District (of which is named after this building). Smile for a photo here before catching a drink nearby.
Tip #2: Five Boroughs to Visit
Many people from the outside may only see New York City as Manhattan, NYC, but there are actually four other boroughs filled with worthwhile sights to see that are often overlooked by international students and tourists. Though many monuments and landmarks are indeed in Manhattan, there are other, more local spots elsewhere in New York where you can fit in seamlessly with the culture and not stick out as an international student! In these cities and boroughs, you may be able to find niches of culture, like the strong Asian community in Flushing, for example. Hop on a train and see where you can go!
Whether you’re here for a long time or here for a good time, New York City has so many places and landmarks to offer you, and you’re sure to make memories you’ll never forget!
