Indonesian Guide in New York City (Restaurants, Groceries, and Bazaar)!!!

Elmhurst, Queens is where the majority of Indonesian in New York lives. Almost every food that reminds Indonesian of Indonesia can be found in Elmhurst! They can either make the food themselves with the tools and ingredients from Indonesian groceries stores or even buying the food made by someone else in restaurants. To be updated in these events, there is a Facebook group chat where Indonesian who lives in New York/New Jersey gather (8.9k members!).

Groceries

Although they do sell the “Indonesian necessities” for a much more expensive price, there are two different groceries stores in Elmhurst. They are called “Indo Java” and “OK Store". These groceries store sell varieties of Indonesian food related items, such as specific Indonesian mould to instant flavoring of Indonesian food. Occasionally, they also sell food from Philadelphia, where the best Indonesian cooks are located. Also, the front tent of the stores are how Indonesian stores would look like!

Restaurants

Of course there has to be Indonesian restaurants! Three big restaurants in the Indonesian communities are Awang Kitchen, Asian Taste 86, and Sky Cafe. They specialize on different foods, but all of them have the basic fried rice (nasi goreng) and fried noodles (mie goreng)! If you want to try something more authentic and different, you should definitely try “Gado-Gado” (vegetable with peanut sauce).

Bazaar

Indonesian community is definitely big in Elmhurst as everything that reminds them of their home country is here. One event that they go to almost every Saturday is Indonesian Food Bazaar that they held in St. James Church, where authentic Indonesian food is being sold (even the packaging is how Indonesian would package their food).
