Flooding Is Not Covered By Property Insurance: Tips from a Tampa, FL Local

Hi! I’m originally from Tampa, FL and this post will discuss flooding. Preparing for a flood is an example of Remembering Work: Work that is Important but Invisible. If you have property insurance, you might think you are covered in case your house gets flooded: think again.

Flooding

What is flooding? Flooding is caused when water overflows. The most frequent cause of the flooding is heavy rain. Coastal areas and river floodplains are the most common areas where flooding occurs.

Flooding In Florida

Flooding is a common occurrence in Florida. According to https://statesatrisk.org/, today, “Florida has 3.5 million people at risk of coastal flooding. By 2050, an additional 1.1 million people are projected to be at risk due to sea-level rise”.

Property Insurance

Did you know property insurance does not cover flooding? Most property insurance covers water damage if it was a mishap, but it does not cover flood damage. Hurricane floods and flash floods are not covered with property insurance.

Flood Insurance

Flood insurance will cover flood damage in homes and belongings. One inch of water can result in over $25,000 worth of damage. To prevent financial devastation from floods, it is recommended to purchase flood insurance.
